Noopept is a synthetic nootropic molecule structurally similar to the endogeous dipeptide cycloprolylglycine (the amino acids proline and glycine in a cyclical configuation). Noopept itself appears to have bioactivity, as does its metabolite cycloprolylglycine (with Noopept sometimes being seen as a cycloprolylglycine pro-drug).
Uses / Benefits / Applications
Relative to Piracetam, Noopept is known to be taken at a much smaller oral dose (10-30mg daily, relative to Piracetam at 4800mg) and is claimed to have a subtle psychostimulatory effect. Currently, the lone human study suggests that their properties are fairly similar after the potency differences have been accounted for.
Although the mechanisms of Noopept are being investigated, the exact mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects (which are very general and seem to apply to vascular and physical cognitive trauma) are still unknown. Many studies also appear to use injections of Noopept into rats rather than administering it orally, although a few studies assessing oral administration have found the effects to be similar. Furthermore, a great deal of studies assessing Noopept are not availible in the English language or are unavailable online (mentioned only in the references of other accessible studies).
When looking at the benefits, which require more human data, there is a general neuroprotective effect that appears to occur in all tested states of cognitive ailment (excitotoxicity, ischemia, oxidative stress, toxin stress, anticholinergics, physical trauma, etc.) but there is no evidence to support a cognitive enhancing effect of Noopept in otherwise healthy humans or animals. There is theoretically a cognitive enhancing effect (as it is noted, somewhat, with piracetam although low in magnitude) and has mechanisms that should result in enhanced cognition in otherwise healthy persons (neurotrophic factor enhancement) but this is yet to be explored
